Should our community be spelled with one word or two? Both versions are seen with about equal frequency throughout town. The PennDOT signs on I-81 identify us as "Mountain Top." The US Postal Service knows us as a two-word town as well. Both Yahoo and MapQuest's online mapping services identify it as "Mountain Top." Input the town as one word, you'll get two back.
The regional daily newspaper, the Times-Leader, decided to go with the two-word version, citing PennDOT's convention. [Times-Leader, June 9, 2002.] The local branch office of the US Postal Service also uses two words.
But many prefer the one-word form, for instance, the local weekly paper, Mountaintop Eagle, and the monthly Journal Mountaintop.
Mountain Top Baptist Church and Mountain Top Paving favor two words (and note that they appear earlier in the phone book than any of the one-word varieties). In support of two words are are the Mountaintop Animal Hospital and Mountaintop Area Joint Sanitary Authority, among others.
We've decided to follow the Postal Service and PennDOT convention in using two words - but however you spell it, it's a great community in which to live, work and raise a family!
